Canine behavioral issues cause more dogs to be euthanized than terminal illness.   This can be avoided w/ obedience training.

Lets Get Your Dog Showcased Here

This web site simply is not big enough to keep a running write up on all the dogs that we work with however, we will showcase your dog for as long as possible upon completion of any one of our training programs.    That way you can show the whole world what you and your best friend has accomplished.

" Do not make the mistake
of treating your dogs like humans or
they will treat you like dogs."
-- Martha Scott --

Harley Boy

This is Harley Boy.   You'll see a lot of pic's of Harley Boy as he is our own Black Labrador retriever and my training assistant.        Harley helps extensively w/ socialization training on other dog and people.   You might have even seen Harley around town.   He's the black dog in a white trailer being pulled by a white motorcycle you might have heard about.    Harley has become proficient in all three levels of obedience as well as having passed the obedience curriculum requirements of other trainers here in Central Missouri as well as trainers in the Kansas City, Missouri area.   He's earned his Canine Good Citizen award from the AKC and has an Indefinite Listing Privilege with the AKC and is our Doggie Cop so to speak for Puppy Night.   He helps to maintain order among the young dogs during play period.
Update:::   Harley Boy is the initial charter member of Pettis County K9 Academy Dog Club

Cletus

Cletus is the newest addition to our family.    Cletus came to us from a former client that had to suspend Cletus's hearing alert training and re-home him.   In the time I had to work w/ Cletus, I came to realize that he had come from the same breeder and even the same mate pair as our Harley Boy making them brothers from different litters.     Knowing this and knowing what a wonderful dog he was, I couldn't bear loosing track of him. Although Cletus has now been through the training levels, he still has quite a bit to learn.    He and Harley make a great team and  if you keep your eye's open, you see us all running around town on the bike.
Update:::   Cletus is the second charter member of Pettis County K9 Academy Dog Club

Lucky

Lucky and his owner tracked us down to help resolve some severe aggression issues.        After an evaluation, it was clear to me that most of Lucky's issues were learned behaviors due to the lack of leadership.    After beginning Basic Obedience Training, Lucky and his owner began to build a vocabulary between themselves while each also respectively learned about relationship skills and leadership skills.       Although Lucky can still occasionally be a handful for his owner, he has improved by leaps and bounds and managed to graduate the basic course. They both still have a lot of work to do and I sincerely hope that they keep after it.   Giving up now and letting Lucky regress would be a terrible waste after all the work everyone has put in on his behalf.    Good luck guys.    Keep up the good work.

Paws

Paws, along w/ her longhair chihuahua canine pal Tex spent a couple of weeks or so w/ us while the rest of the family vacationed.   Tex was primarily here for Paws's morale support and behavior issues but Paws was put through our Boot Camp for boarding & training.       Paws, who what some serious behavioral issues herself made a dramatic transformation.    The first time we saw her, she was  a handful for the dad of the house and when she left to go home after boot camp, she was led away in perfect heel position and obeying all or her basic commands while being handled by her 10 year old human pack leader.    I wish you all could have seen.       I must say, I am very proud of Paws's achievements.     She walked through Basic Obedience on a Boot Camp basis like a champ.    I'm looking forward to seeing her earn her Canine Good Citizen Award in July.     Congratulation Paws, keep up the good work.

Merc

Merc is a terrific young German Shepherd, handsome & happy w/ one of the sharpest, quickest learning dispositions I've ever seen.    He literally breezed through his basic training.    He was referred to us by  an area boarding facility who had a little trouble w/ his energetic outbursts and I'm hopeful that armed w/ some basic commands and a new outlook on how to channel Merc's energy as well as controlling some of his ill placed efforts at attention and exercise he'll be able to become a valuable member of the boarders at the facility where he likes to go.    Now that Merc's mom knows what to do, say and how to act and react, she can instruct the boarding staff as to how to keep a grip on Merc so that he doesn't get into trouble again.    This is a classic example of a behavioral issue that got a bit out of hand but rather than try to "break" the habit, we simply redirected it and reinforced a more positive way of letting Merc express himself.     You'll hear me say time and time again, there's no need to reinvent the wheel, just grease the noisy part a bit.    Naturally, that's an over simplification but the point is, most dogs do as dogs naturally do.   We look forward to seeing Merc join the dog club and become a more active canine around here as well as at home.      Keep up the good work guys.

Bailey

Bailey's owner affectionately call her "Monster" and the first time she came to see us, she was a monster.      Bailey had one of the most sever dog on dog aggression issues I've seen for a young dog.     Immediately starting her in Basic Training gave her and her owner a means to communicate so that rewards and corrections could be more positively understood and as a consequence, Bailey has made leaps and bounds of improvement.    They both still have a lot of hard work ahead of them but now they can see daylight at the end of tunnel.          Most of these aggression issues are "learned behaviors" and once "learned" they become self rewarding for the dog.     We not only have to try to stop or eliminate the immediate reaction to stimulation but we also have to "unlearn" the behavior while also replacing it with something positive.   It can be very challenging and time consuming but worth it.     Keep up the good work guys, you deserve the best and your on your way to it.
Update:::   Bailey is now a tentative member of Pettis County K9 Academy Dog Club 65-27-08

Belle

Lady Annabelle of McRuns or Belle for short is one of our most recent "total turn abounds".        A true diva with a very dog aggressive attitude, Belle was a handful for her owner.         Although Belle is fully mature and still a bit willful, she's made a dramatic transition for the better.         This just goes to show that its never too late to start.      Her command performances have dramatically improved as have her overall manners around other dogs.       Belle still has a ways to go but her and her owner now have the proper tools, skills and incentives to keep working in the right direction.   I am so proud of Belle and her owners efforts and accomplishments in the last few weeks.        I think you'll be seeing more of Belle now.     Belle has the calm and focus now that gives her owner more confidence so I'm sure they'll be seen around town.        Her upcoming AKC CGC evaluation w/ be a major test of her self control and manners & I have complete confidence in her.
Update:::   Belle earned her Canine Good Citizen award 7-2-07
Update:::   Belle is a charter member of Pettis County K9 Academy Dog Club
Update...   Belle earned another Canine Good Citizen award 5-17-08

Sassy

Sassy is a gorgeous boxer that had a very rough start in life.    Once being adopted by her current care takers she be had to begin the long haul of healing and rebuilding her health.     As she regained her strength, some of her true color began showing and she was quickly getting our of control.     Sassy leaned her basic obedience cues very quickly and once her handles and caretaker caught on, they were both a sight to see.         It truly is a  pleasure to see owner and dog walking calmly together as a team and practicing their command routines at the end of our formal training sessions when you saw them come to you like a energy and frustration crazed animal on a rope the first time.    I look forward to seeing Sassy earn her CGC in July and to watch the relationship between her and her owners grow even more.        Keep up the good work guys.    Your doing great.

Kabu

Kabu has been coming to see us since he was just  a pup back in the winter and it just came to my attention that we'd never shown him off.       Since Kabu has been coming to see us, he's earned his Puppy Socialization Certificate, his Bravery Certificate for first time away from home, and his Basic Obedience Certificate after just a week camp over here at Pettis County K9 Academy.      Kabu has since earned his AKC Canine Good Citizen award as well and is member of the Pettis County K9 Academy Dog Club.      His human companiions take him all over town so keep an eye out for him.   He's easy to spot.    Nearing 100 lbs and not even a year old, he's  big boy.     Keep up the good work guys.    We'll see you next week.

Shadow

Shadow has become kind of  little sister to Harley & Cletus.   She first came into our lives back in the bitter cold ice & snow of December, 2007 when she "followed" my daughter home one day as a tiny pup.    Unable to find anyone who would claim her, we took her in and cleaned her up and fed.   Shortly thereafter, I convince our dog loving neighbors Melvin and Better to make a home for Shadow at their house, which they did.     Shadow still spends a great deal of time at our place and seems as comfortable at one place as another.     Tragically though, shortly after being spayed, Shadow came down lame and upon further examination, she was diagnosed w/ severe hip dysplasia at only 6 months old.   She was already in so much pain that she needed help up and down the stairs.    With lots of love and care as well as some traditional as well as experimental "medicines", Shadow is now back up, running with the boys and chasing balls.    Shadow has earned her Puppy Socialization Certificate, the AKC Canine Good Citizen Award as well as her Basic Obedience Certificate and is now a member of the Pettis County K9 Academy Dog Club.     Just goes to show you that age or illness should never be used as an excuse to stop or eliminate training.    Naturally, some modification often have to be found but you must continue to do all you can for your pooch no matter what.    Keep them active and mentally alert greatly improves their quality of life.   Keep an eye out.    You'll see Shadow around and you too will be amazed at her recovery and accomplishments.       If you have an animal w/ ailing joints, ask for details.

Paris

Paris is a delightful, young Golden Doodle that was rescued from a shelter by her human guardian as a pup.    Paris had been through several local training seminars w/ other area trainers and had learned quite well.    Paris's owner came to us with she thought was a canine behavioral issue "not minding" and soon learned that the problem was a human behavioral issue "not leading".    With practice and coaching, Paris and her owner are well on their way to becoming the team that both of them want to be.     I'm looking forward to Paris joining our Pettis County K9 Academy Dog Club and seeing Paris successfully complete her AKC Canine Good Citizen Test in September.          Keep up the great work you two.     You both have so much to teach each other and so much to experience together.   You should be proud of each other.   I'm proud of both of you and expect great things in the future.

 Stoney

Stoney is an Australian Terrier that came to us as a pup a few months ago and has been attending Puppy NIght as well as a short stay w/ us.       Stoney is still full of puppy energy but is turning into a terrific companion to his owners.    Full of life and always ready to smile and play w/ his pals.       Stoney has not completed his Puppy Socialization as well as Basic Training and has already earned his AKC Canine Good Citizen award and is going to be our newest Dog Club Member.         His owners are prominent people here in town so don't be surprised if you see him out and about.        We look for Stoney to be around and involved in PCK9 happenings for a long time to come.    He enjoys being in the middle of everything and its great having him there.    Stoney is currently also the smallest dog in the Dog Club and the funny part, he doesn't realize it nor will he care.      Keep up the great work Stoney.

Heidi

Heidi is an adorable, petite German Shepard that responded wonderfully well to training once her human caregiver mastered consistency and persistence.      Being just a bit timid, Heidi needed a little help coming out of her shell, but once she did, she really blossomed.       I'm always proud and honored to work w/ a pet owner who is willing to and does put forth the time and energy to make a positive difference in their pet and the relationship they share w/ their pet.       This relationship really shows when we practice stays and recalls.     A dog must trust and respect you to succeed at these exercises.      Basic Obedience only expects stays and recalls on a 6' leash.    By the end of our sessions, Heidi was doing them both, off leash, at 30' to 40'.    I expect for Heidi and her owner to participate in the AKC Canine Good Citizen test in September and hope that as soon as time allows, they both join the Pettis County K9 Dog Club        Keep your eyes out for them.     Keep up the good work you two.         I'm proud of you both.

Jasmine

Jasmine, a purebred St. Bernard, came to us as a fluffy little ball of fur and was nearly 100 lbs by the time she was six months old.          Jasmine was a regular throughout the winter on puppy night and made lots of friends.    However, as she began to approach the 100 lb. mark, which is a much as her owner weighs,  she became much more difficult to control.         Enrolling her in Basic Obedience and putting her on a more regimented routine along w/ command training quickly gave her owner the ability to keep Jasmine calm and in control.        With Jasmine learning her doggie manners from Harley Boy and Cletus as well, as her other friends from puppy night as well as understanding what her owner expects from her, Jasmine is turning into a truly terrific dog.         Keep your eyes open, your sure to see more of Jasmine and company.
Update:::   Jasmine earned her Canine Good Citizen award on 7-2-0
Update:::   Jasmine is a charter member of Pettis County K9 Academy Dog Club

Sampson

Sampson, the Rottwieler / Mastiff cross is one of our newest graduates.,   He has been coming to see us off and on since he was a pup and has always been a handful.     When his ever increasing size combined w/ a developing food aggression, he was immediately enrolled in Basic Obedience.   Its amazing how most of these miss-behaviors begin to disappear once you begin to build a vocabulary and learn to verbally interact w/ your dog.    Sampson's improvement began immediately and is still ongoing.    Although Sampson graduated w/ flying colors, there's still work to be done.     We're hopeful that Sampson will go on to pass his Canine Good Citizen evaluation and become a Club member.      No matter what, congratulation are in order.......Keep up the good work.........
